Rob Stephenson received his Ph.D. in demography from the University of Southampton in 1999. Following the completion of his doctoral work, Stephenson worked as a Research Associate with the "Opportunities and Choices in Reproductive Health" research program at the University of Southampton, England, conducting research into reproductive health issues in south Asia and east and west Africa. He then began a post-doctoral program with the Carolina Population Center, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he continued his research interests in reproductive health. Following his post-doc Stephenson moved to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, where he worked as a Faculty Research Associate with the Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health. His activities included the capacity building of our partner institutions in South Asia and East Africa, conducting research into reproductive health issues, and overseeing a Summer Institute program in Reproductive Health and Development.
Stephenson’s research interests center primarily around reproductive health, examining issues of maternal health, family planning and service delivery. The influence of the community and the wider socio-cultural context on individual health is a particular interest of his, and he is currently conducting studies of community effects on maternal health, family planning and domestic violence outcomes.
